One thing comes to mind when I hear “15 minutes,” (actually, two. The second is for another blog.) THE 15 MINUTES MAX FILM FESTIVAL! Here’s a quick introduction for 15MM newbies and a refresher for those well versed:
15 Minutes Max is a growing festival that celebrates emerging filmmakers. The event is now five-years-young, is FREE and open to the public and will take place the evening of October 7 at Albany’s Madison Theater.
All students (high school through college) who live within 50 miles of Albany are welcome to participate. Each year, they have until May to create a film (15 minutes or less, obvi) that falls within one genre: fiction, non-fiction, music video and animation. A panel of judges carefully choose the cream of the crop and those top films will be showcased at Madison Theater October 7 (repetition=memory retention, right?). We have received more entries than ever and can’t wait to show them off to the public this fall!
May 13 marked this year’s submission deadline (so you can stop scrambling to finish that piece about waking up from a nightmare in which you missed an exam). A panel of judges are currently salting popcorn and sharpening pencils to fill out intense rubrics for each film. They will look for proficiency in: storytelling, purpose, mise-en-scene, camera work and editing. Due to copyright violations, a few films have already been disqualified. (Hint to future contestants: Do your research. Don’t steal stuff.)
After each film’s debut on the big screen, one winner will be announced October 7 at Madison Theater (got it?) and will strut off the stage with a cool $200 in their pocket. With a nod in appreciation to the festival’s wonderful attendees, the audience will be invited to cast a secret ballot rewarding one filmmaker the coveted Audience Choice Award. The trophy is a life-size bronze statue of 15MM chief organizer Liz Richards (seriously, though, the prize is bragging rights).
Make sure to follow the fun on Instagram and Twitter (15minutesmax) for upcoming mini-competitions and updates. We will host a 15 Seconds Max Festival on Insta. Anyone following can enter their best original 15 second clip. Winners will be chosen through votes. Also, there will be an opportunity for those who submitted to 15 Minutes Max to create a short vid for Instagram explaining the theme of their film and why they deserve the victory at October’s festival.
Stay tuned for more updates, mind blowing articles and profiles of contestants of the Fifth Annual 15 Minutes Max Film Festival!
